Acer’s latest Windows Mixed Reality headset is the modular OJO 500

Acer has unveiled a slew of new products at IFA 2018, and one of its more intriguing reveals is the OJO 500 Windows Mixed Reality headset, which features a modular design that allows you to detach and replace parts like the head strap and lens.

The Taiwanese company says that this kind of build makes the OJO 500 easier to regularly clean than rival Windows Mixed Reality devices, noting that improved headset hygiene is an obvious benefit when units are shared between multiple parties – business and family environments come to mind.

Hard and soft strap versions of the device will be made available, with the soft one being machine washable, while the OJO 500 is equipped with a pair of 2.89-inch LCD displays offering a 2800 x 1400 pixel resolution, 100-degree field of view, and refresh rate of up to 90Hz.

Elsewhere, the Acer OJO 500 distinguishes itself through its integrated ‘sound pipe’ technology, which beams audio to the user’s ears independent of physical headphones – though the hard strap model offers these for those desiring a more robust experience, as well as coming with additional padding for your noggin.

The device supports both the Steam VR and Microsoft Store platforms, so over 2500 games and apps available to download (provided you’ve got a compatible Windows PC), and will retail from $399 in US and €499 in EMEA countries when it starts shipping in November.

That’s about £450 in the UK based on the latest exchange rate, but a nearly like-for-like pound to euro conversion is hardly out of the question these days.
