The powerful MSI P65 laptop is designed with creators in mind
If you’re in the market for a light but powerful laptop, MSI’s new P65 Creator looks like it could well be worth keeping an eye on.
As the product photography and name suggests, MSI is aiming the P65 at ‘creators’ – people who make their place in the world through animation, photography, design or art. Although it actually looks like it could be a modified version of MSI’s Stealth GS65 gaming laptop.
It certainly has the specifications to moonlight as a gaming machine in between extended Photoshop sessions. The regular version comes with an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 or 1050 Ti graphics card, and the limited edition white edition packs a GTX 1070. Powered by up to an eighth-generation Intel Core i7 processor, with two DR4-2666 slots supporting up to a maximum of 32GB RAM, it should manage comfortably with the majority of your Steam library.
All well and good, but what makes it aimed at creatives, rather than gamers? Well, chiefly it seems to come down to its colour scheme. Gone is the garish backlighting and bright colours, and in its place is a more muted, professional design. It also adds a fingerprint reader, though loses the 144Hz display from its gaming brother, for the entry-level model.
It also comes with a lot of software for creative types – which is a bit odd, as you’d imagine any creative worth their salt would already have the software they need. Nonetheless, MSI reckons the lot would come to $400 if bought separately: Magix Movie Edit Pro 2018, Fastcut, Paintshop Pro X9, PC Mover Express, Samplitude Music Studio 2017 and others.
Crucially though, it’s light and portable. It’s just 17.9mm thick, and despite packing a 15.6-inch screen managed to come in at just 1.8kg. That thin frame manages to pack in a battery that should last eight hours – although considerably less if you decide to push its gaming credentials.
No official word on pricing or release date, but Notebook Check claims a starting price of €1700 (around £1525/$1980) with a launch planned in October.
