Samsung Odyssey looks like the best Windows Mixed Reality headset yet

With its Oculus-supported Gear VR headset, Samsung has been pushing the boundaries of affordable VR for years.

Now the company is getting in on the emerging mixed reality scene by announcing its first headset for Microsoft’s Windows Mixed Reality platform.

The Samsung HMD Odyssey looks like it might surpass existing Windows MR devices from Acer, Asus, Dell, HP and Lenovo.

It uses dual-AMOLED displays (rather than LCD), each with a resolution of 1,400 x 1,400. The display offers a 90Hz refresh rate and a large, 110-degree field of view.

That puts it on a par with the 110-degrees in the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive.

The head mounted display, which runs on Windows 10, also features built-in AKG headphones with spatial audio.

The Odyssey will go on November 6 for $499, Microsoft says.

Halo: Recruit coming too

Other headsets will be available from October 17 to coincide with the release of the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update. Microsoft is promising 20,000 compatible apps will be available from the Windows Store.

The company has also announced the launch of a Halo mixed reality experience. Halo: Recruit will be available as a free download.

The Windows Mixed Reality platform will also support SteamVR titles.
