Star Wars: The Clone Wars to return on Disney’s streaming service – watch the first trailer

Disney’s forthcoming standalone streaming service will be headlined by a new season of the much-loved animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars.

The surprise Season 7 announcement came during a panel discussion at the San Diego Comic Con this week and will mark the first new episodes since the show was cancelled in 2014.

The new 12-episode run was announced as part of a ten-year anniversary celebration, with a new trailer earning a standing ovation from fans present for the session in California (via ET Online). Hashtag Clone Wars Saved.

The series, which fills the gap between Episode II and Episode III of the Skywalker saga, chronicles the battle between the Jedi and the Republic’s clone army (who would of course become Stormtroopers) and the separatists and their droids. The series features classic characters like Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Count Dooku, Chancellor Palpatine and Bail Organa.

The first six seasons are still on Netflix in the US, while Sky have the rights in the UK if you need to catch up before season 7. Get in there now, because Disney content will probably disappear from Netflix when Disney’s standalone offering arrives in the autumn of 2019.

“I honestly didn’t think we would ever have the opportunity to return to The Clone Wars,” creator and producer Dave Filoni said in a press release.

“Thanks to the relentless fan support and the team behind Disney’s direct-to-consumer streaming service, we will now get to tell more of those stories. We feel a tremendous responsibility to make something that lives up to the legacy that George Lucas created with the original series and I think our team, many of whom worked on the show from the beginning, has risen to the challenge.”

The confirmation could even mean season 8 is on the way. Back in 2014 a Clone Wars writer told a fan season 7 and 8 were both written.
